Weekend Sewing
I've been sewing squares again.
My inspiration for this lot of squares was the arrival of Jennifer Paganelli of Sis Boom's latest range Beauty Queen. I was poised with my rotary cutter, ready to cut up the pretty stack of fabrics but then I had that thing where you can't cut up new and precious fabric. On the other hand the Beauty Queen fabrics were so pretty so I decided to use bits of them mixed and matched with fabrics from past Sis Boom ranges. The selection I ended up with is from about 10 different ranges from over 5 years.
I really like the mix of colours and styles I ended up with. I placed the squares on my design wall as I cut them and chose fabrics as I went along. I'd reach for the next fabric based on how it was looking, whether it needed more pink for warmth or yellow to brighten it. The combination ended up being lots of pretty florals and girly pinks and lemons with some punchy navy and even a bit of black and white thrown in for oomph!
I've contrasted the colours with natural linen backing and have quilted the lot with straight line quilting. I love the texture this type of quilting adds to the quilt.
So now I'm up to the binding which I should get finished today. It looks like another lovely sunny day so I'll sit outside with Ginger Fluff and Maybellene and listen to their chicken stories about how they like to wander around the garden looking for worms to eat.
I'll be back with photos of a finished quilt soon. Hopefully our sunny days will hold out long enough for some fun photos. I think this quilt is calling out for some flowery garden shots.

The Umbrella Prints Trimmings Competition entries are now on show on Pinterest.
I don't envy the judges job of picking favourites. There are so many wonderful entries, and a such wide variety of ideas.
Pop over Here to the Pinterest page to have a look and vote for your favourites.
Of course I'd be very pleased if you voted for either of my entries. :)
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!!

I love your magnet quilt. I pinned it the other today and want to make one for my fridge!
ReplyDeleteLove both projects, clever you.
ReplyDeleteSuch pretty fabrics! I can see why you didn't want to cut it up. Love your fabric magnet pieces--I'm so tempted to make my own set.:)
ReplyDeletePretty fabrics in the squares Michelle. I reckon if you make a scrappy quilt, it should be from a multitude of fabrics, not just one range.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dasha, I wasn't thinking of this as a scrap quilt but more a celebration of one fabric designers work and how her different ranges can mix together. I agree that 'the more variety the better' works well for scrap quilts.
ReplyDeleteyou have thoroughly distracted me from what I going to work on this afternoon! My Beauty Queen order arrived this week. I was going to cut it up into squares too. I just adore all those fab-u-lous florals all hanging out together. The mix of ranges is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteProof that Beauty Queen is right at home with each and every Sis Boom print! I keep wanting to mix it with past collections too, instead of cutting it all up and using it in one project. Decisions, decisions.
ReplyDeleteJust lovely Rachael! I love the simplicity of squares!
ReplyDeleteOoh, this quilt looks gorgeous. It's hard to cut into "precious" fabric, isn't it? One of my failings and a major reason I have sooooo much fabric!!! Voting done!!
ReplyDeleteJust joined Pinterest ( have been trying not to for a couple of years as I already spend too much time on Flickr and blogs!). However I don't know how to find the Umbrella Trimmings Competition to vote for my favourites. I clicked on your link in this post but nothing happened. Help!!
ReplyDeleteLove that quilting Rachael!!!

Gorgeous, gorgeous squares. I hope you and the chickens had a lovely day!
ReplyDeletesimply great! I love the varying scale of the prints and those pops of black make it really sparkle. great simple quilting too -
ReplyDeletesay hi to the "girls" for me :)
that really is beautiful fabric - I haven't really noticed the colours she uses before but they are fantastic. Can't wait to see the finished quilt :-)
ReplyDeleteLooks like another beautiful quilt Rachael! I really like the effect that straight line quilting gives too (though it takes a lot longer than FMQ!).
ReplyDeleteThat is a great idea to do with one particular designer's fabrics...I have a lot of Bonnie and Camille fabrics and that would be a perfect thing to do with those....Every line they've come out with uses the same basic colors and they would very easily make and interesting scrap quilt of balanced color. Now I'll pop over and vote for my favorite in the Umbrella P T competition...
ReplyDeleteYou of course !
Such a good idea! Love those wall vases!
ReplyDeleteLove your collection of sis boom! And I agree with the simplicity and texture of straight line quilting. Best of luck in the competition Rachael!
